The best example of what you are describing shows up in the book "Rising Out of Hatred" about a White Nationalist who attended New College of Florida (formerly a very liberal honors college, now taken over by the right) and through a process initiated by other students came to question and then disavow the beliefs he came to school holding. Eli Saslow wrote the book and it is excellent.

Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds like a powerful story and a worthy read, and I’ve added it to my reading list. David McRaney explores a few similar journeys in How Minds Change, tracing examples like a 9/11 denier, a former Westboro Baptist Church picketer, and others. These stories of how people shift deeply held beliefs are endlessly fascinating to me.
