Your essay reminded me that the best sports writing is never just about sports. Roger Angell wrote that baseball is "designed to break your heart." A. Bartlett Giamatti called baseball "a metaphor for life." And Thomas Boswell's essays Why Time Begins on Opening Day and Why Life Imitates the World Series capture how sports reflect our society—for better and for worse. The World Cup is a mirror of our politics, identities, aspirations, and shared humanity. Thanks for a thoughtful piece.
